Self-Care Essentials for Stress Relief

What is self-care and why is it important? Often women prioritize their families above themselves in terms of time, focus and activities and there’s nothing wrong with that UNLESS it causes so much stress and anxiety that moms burn out. Burnout can be a fancy way of expressing what clinicians call a “major depressive episode.” In days of yore we called it a “nervous breakdown.” Burnout can be slowly stopping enjoyable activities, housework or even personal grooming. It can be a slow sink into depression or it can come on suddenly with a feeling of being completely overwhelmed and dissolving into fits of crying. Either way, it’s not what you want and it’s disastrous for your family if it happens.
Taking time for self-care, even a little, can keep burnout at bay by reducing stress in the moment or moments that you take for yourself. Unfortunately for busy women, especially moms, times of self-care can seem like a luxury and we can even be ashamed of taking them.
